HTML5 is the bleeding edge of the HTML standard. In web design, HTML is the language that allows web designers to structure and present web content. This web content is what search engines read and is given the structure in which search engines need to process a web page and determine its content. The processed contents are then passed through the search engine algorithms, ranked and optimized.
There are some differences in HTML5 comparing it to the previous version HTML4. One of which that possibly impact search engine algorithms greatly is probably its improved page segmentation.
Improved page segmentation
Basically, page segmentation means that a page is divided into several separate parts (i.e. main content, menus, headers, footers, links sections, etc.) and these parts are treated as separate entries. In HTML5 this is handled by new HTML tags:

<article> tag – This tag indicates separate entries in a blog or an online magazine. Search Engines will prioritize more the content inside the <article> tag as compared to the contents on the other parts of the page.
<section> tag – This tag indicates separate sections on a page needing headings. Search engines will have a better understanding of how the web page is segmented and structured reading this tag.
<header> tag – This tag indicates the section on the page containing the site name and logo and also the navigation menu. Search engines will be able to readthis tag and readily process those pieces of information.
<footer> tag – This tag can contain search engine data such as copyright information, or static links and social media profiles which can be used for SEO Marketing uses as well.
<nav> tag – Navigation is one of the important factors for SEO. Providing this tag could help search engine algorithms site navigation and provide details on the page’s architecture.
The tags listed above, are just some of the new tags in HTML5 that affect SEO in some way. To be on the bleeding edge of SEO, one has to know the new HTML5 features to get ahead in the search engine optimization game.
